Three Questions Concerning Consonance Perception
نویسندگان
چکیده
I discuss three fundamental questions underpinning the study of consonance: 1) What features cause a particular chord to be perceived as consonant? 2) How did humans evolve ability perceive these features? 3) Why attribute aesthetic valences (if they at all)? The first question has been addressed by several recent articles, including Friedman, Kowalewski, Vuvan, and Neill (2021), with common conclusion that consonance in Western listeners is driven multiple such harmonicity, interference between partials, familiarity. On this basis, it seems relatively straightforward answer second question: each grounded aspects human auditory perception, scene analysis long-term memory. However, third harder resolve. describe potential answers, argue present evidence insufficient distinguish them, despite what claimed literature. conclude discussing kinds future studies might able shed light on problem.

Perception, Introspection and Functional Consonance
by JOHN DILWORTH Western Michigan University [Theoria 2006.4: 299-318.] Abstract What is the relation between a perceptual experience of an object X as being red, and one's belief, if any, as to the nature of that experience? A traditional Cartesian view would be that, if indeed object X does seem to be red to oneself, then one's resulting introspective belief about it could only be a conformin...
متن کاملSome Questions concerning Minimal Structures
An infinite first-order structure is minimal if its each definable subset is either finite or co-finite. We formulate three questions concerning order properties of minimal structures which are motivated by Pillay’s Conjecture (stating that a countable first-order structure must have infinitely many countable, pairwise non-isomorphic elementary extensions). In this article a connection between ...
متن کاملConsonance perception of complex-tone dyads and chords
Sensory consonance and dissonance are perceptual attributes of musical intervals conveying pleasantness, tension, and harmony in musical phrases. For complex-tone dyads, corresponding to two musical notes played simultaneously, consonance is known to vary with the ratio in fundamental frequency (F0) between the two tones in the dyad. While such a relationship is well established for dyads, the ...
متن کاملInfants’ Perception of Consonance and Dissonance in Music
The origins of the perception of consonance and dissonance in music are a matter of debate. The present study examined the hypothesis of an innate preferential bias favoring consonance over dissonance by exposing 4 month old infants to consonant and dissonant versions of two melodies. Infants looked significantly longer at the source of sound and were less motorically active to consonant compar...
